Steps To Find a Shower Leak

Bathroom leaks can be difficult to diagnose because you could have a bathtub leak, or the water could be coming from your toilet, sink, or pipes. These three steps can help you find a shower leak.

1. Check Underneath
Depending on whether your shower is situated over a crawlspace, slab, or a living area, there are different signs you can look for to detect a shower pan leak. For a shower over a crawlspace, look for white, crusty stalactites, hanging from damp wood in the crawlspace.
If your shower is on a slab, check for signs of damage in the surrounding area. Loose floor tiles, wet carpet, or water damage to nearby walls and floorboards can be a sign of a leak.
If your shower is on an upper floor, look for wet ceiling tiles in the room below the bathroom. However, be aware that wet tiles could indicate a leak from anywhere in the bathroom.

2. Look for Mold
If you are regularly cleaning the bathroom and making sure to wipe down your shower and sink after use, but still finding mold, that can be a sign of a water leak. If the mold is growing on the caulk or grout around the base of the tub or between shower tiles, that can indicate that the shower is the source of the leak.

3. Check the Base
Cover the drain of your shower with duct tape and then fill the base with water from another source. If a leak appears, then your base is probably leaking. If not, remove the tape. If it leaks, then the drain is probably the culprit. If not, then the source of the leak is probably something else, such as the pipes, shower head, or shower tiles.
Diagnosing a bathtub leak can be a tricky problem, but these tips can help you find the source. If you need assistance cleaning up after a leak, a water cleanup professional in Hollywood, FL, can assist you.
